BIG INK will be partnering with XOS Exchange Street Open Studios for an outdoor event that fosters appreciation for the art of woodcut printmaking. On September 17th, BIG INK will bring a 48” x 96” mobile printmaking press to XOS. The press will be rolled onto the Exchange Court sidewalk and BIG INK volunteers will help the participating artists print woodcuts en plein air. The finished prints will be hung in a highly visible area, creating an outdoor viewing gallery for all to enjoy.
The participating artists, selected in a national competition, will have carved wood blocks measuring 2 x 3 feet in size. Visitors will apply ink to the carved woodblocks under supervision and witness woodcuts being printed in an open forum. Handouts will explain the process, it’s history, and context in contemporary art. In addition, the artists who created the work will be in attendance to network and answer questions. The prints created at BIG INK events are exhibited in university galleries, art centers, and museums, such as a recent show in Seoul, Korea.
Rain date is Sunday, September 18.
